  1. Combine warm milk, warm water, yeast, and 1 tsp of the sugar in a jug. Stir and let sit for 10 minutes, or until frothy.

  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Rub in butter until the mixture is crumbly, then add the egg and yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.

  3. Knead for 10 minutes by hand (or 5–7 minutes in a mixer) until smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  4. Punch down dough, divide into 12 even pieces, and roll each into a smooth log about 10–12 cm long. Arrange on a lined tray, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes.

  5. Preheat oven to 200 °C (fan 180 °C). Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until light golden. Cool completely before icing.

  6. To make the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add sweetener and vanilla; beat again until fluffy. Gradually mix in milk until spreadable. Tint pink if desired.

  7. Spread frosting thickly over cooled buns and finish with coconut or sprinkles.
